A special CID team, along with the Anuradhapura Police, raided a restaurant in Anuradhapura town yesterday and recovered 14 counterfeit Rs 500 currency notes. The restaurant was owned by a woman. She, her son and an employee of the restaurant were taken into custody along with the counterfeit currency
Police said the discovery was only the tip of an iceberg. Preliminary investigations point to this being a long standing operation where millions have changed hands. Police suspect that similar detections made elsewhere in the country, in the recent past, probably originated from this restaurant.
On questioning, the woman said that she received her supplies from Polonnaruwa and had given a telephone number and address. A special police team has been dispatched to Polonnaruwa for further investigations.
The particular restaurant sells liquor without permit and some of the counterfeit bills may have been given in the form of balance money to intoxicated customers, Police believe.
