Kegalle Police mounted a major search operation after receiving a complaint that a mysterious aircraft had been seen flying over the mountains in the area during the early hours of yesterday.
A female resident who had returned from the hospital around 2.45 am had seen a mysterious aircraft with a red light, flying amidst the mountains while generating a sound similar to that of a hand tractor.
She had immediately informed one of her brothers attached to the military in Colombo, who had in turn informed Police Emergency.
Kegalle Division SSP Wilfred Mahanayake told the Daily Mirror that a group of 60 additional policemen called in from surrounding stations to comb the areas around Balalpola and Dampalgoda mountains to search for any suspicious aircraft.
The search carried out till last evening had not produced anything suspicious. According to SSP Mahanayake, even if a suspicious aircraft had been seen by anyone, there was no possibility of any flying craft landing or take off amidst the mountainous forests.
However, police are continuing investigations and have instructed the public to be more vigilant.
