The State of emergency was extended by a further month with a majority of votes of the parliament on Wednesday, the 09th of May.
Parliament gave an extension of the state of emergency for a further month with a majority of 109 votes. 124 votes were cast in favour and 15 against. The UNP parliamentarians abstained from voting.
Moving the resolution, Prime Minister Ratnasiri Wickremanayake said a suitable set of proposals will be forwarded on behalf of the national security. He referred to the many victories achieved in the past due to the military strategies undertaken by the armed forces.
The Prime Minister said that the troops had succeeded in marginalizing the terrorists by following clear military strategies. The government is playing a responsible role to create a conducive environment for the people to live without fear and suspicion in the near future.
The Prime Minister called on all members of the house to support the resolution to further extend the emergency to maintain law and order and to protect public property.
