Six persons including two children were bitten by a stray dog in the premises of the Kandy General Hospital in the early hours yesterday.
The stray dog disappeared as some of those present at the time made attempt to attack him.
The Chief Veterinary Surgeon of the Kandy Municipal Council Dr. S. R. Jayasinghe told `The Island` that as soon as he received the information he rushed to the Kandy hospital.
It was about 2 a.m. Thursday.
Not only the hospital grounds but the entire Kandy City limits have turned a haven for stray dogs whose masters take no care of them, such dogs have become a serious threat to life of people, he said.
The Kandy Municipal Council is barred from executing powers vested on it following certain actions of a Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) which has come forward to protect the rights of stray dogs without ensuring adequate shelter for those animals, Dr. Jayasinghe said.
Dr. Jayasinghe stressed the need to exercise the legal powers vested in the Municipal Council with regard to unclaimed pets.
