RAVANA

Friday, 6 April 2007 - 5:03 PM SL Time

In the Age of the Ramayana Epic, Ravana was the most powerful Tamil King of Lankapuri (Sri Lanka). He was a renowned devotee of Siva, who was pleased with his severe penances and austerities, granted him the boons of earthly fame and worldly might. Ravana was a very talented Veena (Indian music instrument) player. Ravana used Veena picture on the country flag. Ravana is not a Hindu God but rather a demon given great powers by the Gods because of his worship. The Gods granted him immunity from Death by a God and conferred super-powers upon him. Ravana set himself up as Tamil King of Lankapuri (Ceylon or Sri Lanka).

In the height of his sovereignity, imbued with the desire to have the Lord of Kailas, his tutelary Diety installed in Lanka, he exceeded the limits of disciplined discrimination, and attempted by his invincible strength to transfix Mount Kailas, the traditonal abode of Siva from the Himalayan region to that of Lanka. He was foiled in this feat by the Lord crushing him under His Feet; and finally it was his astonding act of penance that saved him from the wrath of Siva. Ravana ripped into his left thigh, removed the nerve fibres and turned it into a lyre, and sang praise of Siva. Then it was that Siva released him, pleased with his mortification. This episode of Ravana was constantly alluded by the Saiva psalmists to signify that piety and devotion alone without purity and humility, could not redeem man or give him peace. Ravana was a great Hindu Bhakta; yet his code of life violated the Hindu Dharma and he had to pay for it dearly.

Again in the life of Ravana, his insatiable pride and lust made him carry off Sita, the chaste wife of Rama of the powerful dynasty of Raghu at Ayodhya, when they were living in the forest in exile. Rama and his union with the monkey God Hanuman to eventually attack Lankapuri (Ceylon or Sri Lanka) and kill Ravana. Ravana was able by magic art to take his soul out of his body and leave it in a box at home, while he went to the wars. Thus he was invulnerable in battle. When he was about to give battle to Rama, he deposited his soul with a hermit called Fire-eye, who was to keep it safe for him. So in the fight Rama was astounded to see that his arrows struck the king without wounding him. But one of Rama`s allies, knowing the secret of the king`s invulnerability, transformed himself by magic into the likeness of the king, and going to the hermit asked back his soul. On receiving it he soared up into the air and flew to Rama, brandishing the box and squeezing it so hard that all the breath left the King of Lankapuri`s (Ceylon or Sri Lanka) body, and he died. You will get much pleasure from reading the Ramayana and tracking the whole adventure.

There are lot of evidence proofs that powerful Tamil King of Lankapuri (Ceylon or Sri Lanka) Ravana has been lived in Trincomalee. Because the Tamil tradition has it that the wife of the mythical king of Lankapuri, Ravana who was a devotee of Siva, worshipped at the Koneswaram shrine in Trincomalee. Another proof is Discovery of Ravana`s swayambhu lingam. It was originally found on a Tibetan mountain and later brought to Sri Lanka reportedly by the Tamil King Ravana. Moreover, in the Ramayana Epic period Ravana has used Veena as Ceylon Flag and according to the `Veena` Pictures on the Trincomalee Fort proofs that Ravana has dominated in Trincomalee. Also the seven Hot Wells (Hot springs) in Kanniya was made by the Tamil king Ravana.

Also the seven Hot Wells (Hot springs) in Kanniya was made by the Tamil king Ravana

There are few legends regarding the kanniya springs, but one that i read there was that Ravana prayed to Lord Shiva to request a boon, when his boon was denied in frustration he pierced the ground with his sword 7 times, and 7 fountains of water of different temperatures emerged from the ground. regarded as sacred water, and encased in wells.

this should be made into a world heritage site, especially as the roman baths in bath town in SW england is a world heritage site, and kanniya is of an older but similar phenomenon.

The Ramayana is not part of the mainstream Sinhala religious and cultural tradition in Sri Lanka, because Buddhism has been the religion of the majority of Sinhalas for long. But ancient Sinhala works like Rajavaliya and Ravanavaliya identify Ravana as a Sinhala king and extol him as a great one.
In modern Sri Lanka, there has been a movement to revive Ravana as a cult figure, who represents Sinhala or Sri Lankan nationalism because he was among the first in the island s history to have resisted an alien/Indian invader. Ravana s ten heads represent the ten crowns he wore as a result of his being the sovereign of ten countries.
Scholar Arisen Ahubudhu is the current representative of the ultra nationalistic Hela movement founded by the renowned Sinhala litterateur, the Late Munidasa Kumaratunga. The Hela movement has been urging the Sinhalas to go back to their roots shunning Indian, Hinduistic and other alien influences.

In his book Sakvithi Ravana (first published in 1988) Ahubudhu says that Ravana reigned over Sri Lanka from 2554 to 2517 BC. He quotes Ravanavaliya to say that Ravana belonged to the Sun race as Ra signifies the sun and vana signifies generation.

Ravana s ten heads represent the ten crowns he wore as a result of his being the sovereign of ten countries. Ravana s ancestors ruled over what is now the Polonnaruwa district in North Central Sri Lanka, the name Polonnaruwa being a derivative of the word Pulasthi, the name of the dynasty to which Ravana belonged. Ravana, however, ruled over the entire island and many places beyond.

Ahubudhu trashes the Ramayana story that Rama invaded Sri Lanka because Ravana had kidnapped Sita. According to the author, Ravana s step brother Vibhishana, had invited Rama to invade Sri Lanka because he was wanting to oust Ravana from the kingship of the island.

When considering the fact that Sita s chastity was proved, this can be taken as a story concocted by Yuwaraja Vibhishana in order to discredit Ravana in the eyes of his people and take advantage thereof, he says.

There is a epigraph that is located at Yala . Which is described that Buddhist Ravana s daughter Sohili had donated cavern to Maha sangha under the Kashyapa buddha.

Likewise there is a epigraph at Nuwara eliya which was indicated that Ravana s chief MInister Makara had donated cavern to venerable Maha Sangga under the Kashyapa buddha.

If you would read 'Lankawathara Sutta' the ancient book in Sri Lanka , that book had been indicated clearly that Ravana was buddhist king under Kashayapa buddha.

Besides there are a lot of evidence that we can prove the Ravana is purely sinhala(Siw hela) buddhist king as well as vegetarian. Ravana had indicated one of his medical book that by eating beef , human have to sicken 98 diseases.
Great king Ravana was descendent from Raksha(demon) group who are one major group under the siwhela(Sinhalease.). Tamils are saying that Ravana is demon king. Then we can assure that Ravana is totally sinhala king.
epigraphs are showing real history. Every epigraphs which were related with Ravana era, had thoroughly said that Dasis Ravana was a devotee buddhist king..

Sri lanka is homeland of siwhela. Siwhela has been eveluated as sinhala. Siwhela(Siw is mean four according to the sinhala.) is belonging four groups. Those are Yaksha,Naga,Raksha,Asura. Raksha is mean demon. Truth can be never hidden. We know that a lot of our ancient kings (including Ravana) are worhiped by Tamils. We are very happy about that. Since tamils are afraid to many sinhala kings. That is why they are worshiping them. Exactly many tamils will be worshiping president Mahinda Rajapaksha as their god. But we are respecting and memorizing them every day as well as forever.

After 2000 years from today, Tamil will say that 'Mahinda Rajapaksha was Tamil precident'. Since they will worship President Mahinda rajapaksha as their god. Since most tamil terrorists(not genuine tamils) are passing out urine , when hearing the name of president Mahinda Rajapaksha including prabhakaran..
