The Coconut Development Authority (CDA) is planning to open up a sales outlet in Narahenpita during the festive season.
` The outlet will be located in the head office premises of the CDA and all coconut products will be available at the outlet,` said Programme Assistant (Economic Research) Udaya Namalgama to The Island Financial Review.
The CDA is planning an efficient delivery system of fresh coconuts to meet the increased demand, which is usual, during the Avurudu season. All the cleared areas are covered under this project, noted Namalgama.
He said the CDA carried out a similar programme in the city of Colombo three months back, which resulted in easing the high prices of coconut.
Oil, copra, vinegar, coconut milk, coconut milk powder and other kernel products as well as non-kernel products such as brooms, brushes, ornamental products and fibre-related coconut products will be available at the head office sales outlet.
`We think customers will benefit from our price range for fresh coconuts and other products, which will be comparatively cheaper than those in the open market .The CDA is considering a price range of Rs.14 to Rs.15 per nut for fresh coconut, said Namalgama, adding that `our objective is to aid small- and medium-scale producers and entrepreneurs selling their products.`
The CDA is of the opinion that it is a good opportunity for the small- and medium-scale entrepreneurs to introduce their new products to the market. Through the project, should it gain momentum, the opportunity will be widened leading to international markets.
Namalgama also said that ornamental products have more scope through innovation and skilledcraftmanship toget a foothold in the overseas markets.
Moreover, he added, the CDA hopes to extend open more sales outlets to major cities and regionally, beginning with Kurunegala and Kegalle.
`CDA is always there to help and promote small- and medium- scale entrepreneurs to find new markets and gather market information, while aiding coconut cultivators,`
