Good to note that there are still some people around who refer to SL as Paradise!

[Accordind to the new rules a travel who comes to colombo to spend time relaxing in his hotel can be fined too.]

What happens in other countries when laws are broken? Don`t they get fined? Why this traveler do not smoke in the plane?

Yes Sri Lanka has many other important issues but it doesn`t mean that one cannot ignore the law and allowed to break it with impunity even for smoking in areas designated for non smoking and drinking in Public.

Smoking in cinema`s were prohibited decades ago ,but apparently people started to ignore the law and get bewildered when they are fined for breaking the law. I witnessed an incident in 70`s at Liberty cinema when a man was asked not to smoke in side the theater he stupidly said he had the right to do so because he bought a ticket.

Australia is not the place for the Police Sergeant and the Judge. They will be miserable in Australia - because as Indians say - one has to drink beer to be Aussie

Smoking and drinking in public places must be banned, but fining Rs.10000 is ridiculous! I think 2000 to 5000Rs for the first timers aren`t that bad.

    Respect,

Point taken, but 10000 these days is nothing in SL, you can finish it in one shopping trip for groceries.

    Vishnu

i understand that , but you have to consider not everyone is like that. Although a person can afford to drink couple of beers and as being stupid drink in a public area but 10000 Rs can be his monthly salary. There is a big gap between rich and poor people in sri lanka. All im saying is they must be fined but not to that extent. They better off catch a drunk bus driver and fine him 10000.
