A man arrested by the Mt Lavinia police on Monday for having in his possession four camouflage uniforms worn by US security forces personnel has said that they were brought as gifts to some of his friends in the Army on their request. When the police questioned them they have denied that they requested the suspect to bring the camouflage uniforms. The suspect identified as Evans Jayasuriya is an American citizen and had been living in America for the last 35 years and involved with an NGO. He has told police that his visit to Sri Lanka was in connection with a Tsunami Housing Project in Moratuwa.
Police were baffled as to how he was able to smuggle it out of the customs at the BIA. Customs officers have told police that the suspect had used the `green channel` meant for those who don`t have anything to declare. He has been detained by the Mt Lavinia police and is being further interrogated to find out why he exactly brought these commando type uniforms worn by the US army.
