Sri Lankan security forces arrested three Sinhalese men in Colombo, with strong evidence proving their linkage with the LTTE, with a haul of arms and ammunition in their possession.
Two journalists and an independent graphic designer cum type setter have been arrested and one of the journalists was a ranked activist in one of the Trade Unions in the Railway Department. Apparently they were even permitted to enter the Media Centre for National Security in Colombo, Defence Spokesman Minister Keheliya Rambukwella stated.
The security forces found six kilogramme load of C4 explosives buried in a foundation of a house in Kaluthara area, 43km from the capital city, Military spokesman Brigadier Prasad Samarasinghe revealed at the media briefing where the video taped confessions of the arrested men was publicized among the journalists.
These suspects confessed that two years back (2005) they received exclusive military training from the LTTE at a camp in Kilinochchi, where the LTTE claim they have their headquarters, under a Tiger leader named Kapila Amman. The second phase of training was spoiled as they were arrested before the plan came in to action. With them several others have received the military training from the LTTE. The leading figure of the gang during his confession states that he himself through a supporter contacted the LTTE for a negotiation to assist them in their mission.
He admitted, even though they received training the disasters carried out were not successful hence they discussed of a second training and were waiting for trainers from the LTTE at the time of their arrest two days back. As the LTTE have suggested them to send another group for training as the new plot needed more manpower they were planning for the second group of training.
They even have received weapons and monetary funds from the LTTE and the two teams have exchanged weapons at Welisara, approximately just ten kilometers from Colombo. As per the request of this new Southern terrorist group, LTTE have sent T56 weapons and bullets then another load of weapons and lastly claymore mines. So far, this gang has received 1 to 1.1 million rupees from the LTTE in support of their actions. A Sri Lankan living in Canada was one of the main supporters in this series.
During their confessions, the massive destruction plans of their party were revealed that could have caused huge tragedy in the society and their previous plans that were carried out especially against the Indian Oil Company by trying to explode three of its fuel stations with the assistance of LTTE in three cities in the out-skirts of Colombo. The leading figure in the gang, during his confession states that their party is against the neo imperialism with a different face and their main aim was to strongly act against it.
These people were arrested separately at Athurugiriya, Dematagoda and Keththarama areas - in the immediate vicinity of Colombo city. Six kilogrammes of C4 explosives, four T-56 weapons and 449 rounds of ammunition, 02 micro pistols and 49 rounds of ammunition, 50 rounds of 09mm ammunition, 02 claymore mines each weighing 01 kilogramme and 60 electronic detonators were found as per their information given.
Apparently, the suspects states they had ten kilogrammes of C4 explosives and one member has delivered two kilogrammes to a person in Galle and have transported the package as a passenger in the train and handed over the package at the Galle Railway station. The rest of the missing amount has also being given out to various people on requests, they stated.
The gang has carried out, as an experimental measure, five explosions at Kiribathgoda, Wattala, Rajagiriya, Nugegoda and Dehiwala using the explosives they received from LTTE. Then another attempt, where they used the claymore bombs at Kadawatha in the Ganemulla road where they missed the target and another at Mahara Junction also in Kadawatha which they had to change plans due to a calamity among them. This was aimed at a Cabinet Minister which was solely a decision of the mastermind of the group. Apparently, the claymore has been found by the security forces, they revealed. Kadawatha area is in the immediate vicinity of Colombo. They even have tried to explode a communication tower in Radawana, Kirindiwela in the Gampaha district.
The so called leader has supplied explosives and ammunition to a member of the party in Koggala ? a coastal city in Southern province of the island.
`The Railway department unions acted against this arresting, claiming him as an innocent railway worker. Now it has become clear that this person was surely involved in this calamity in Colombo as well as in outstation cities. They have stretched their arm even out of Colombo but it was the city that was focused initially. Even highly responsible parliamentary members also accused the government interpreting this as an abduction of innocents,` Minister Rambukwella commented.
`There are certain measures the government has to take in the best interest of the people and assure the safety of the country,` Minister added.
Further Mr. Rambukwella stated that though these arrests have been inaccurately interpreted as abductions Government by no means support abductions or violation of human rights and there is a huge difference between abducting and arrests.
`These actions are done not for the fun of it nor does it have any personal vendettas. It`s purely considering the security and safety of innocent people and the sovereignty of the country,` Minister added.
`We (Sri Lanka) are not going through normal situations. At times the identity cards can also be a fake. Hence, at times the security personnel have to go for an extra mile to clarify the identity. In this instance, these journalists were even permitted to come to the MCNS. So it`s a challenge before the rule,` he stressed.
Brigadier Samarasinghe said that the security forces received this information from a civilian few months ago and it was constantly followed up and investigated before these arrests were made and confirmed that this is not an action taken haphazardly.
`Under these situations the public has to be more aware and cautious about their surroundings and people they come across ? regardless of ethnicity, profession or creed of a person,` Brigadier Samarasinghe added while expressing his gratitude towards the public for the immense support they extend in eradicating terrorism.

Who owens Akuna News paper? I have never heard of it. What type of Political views does it carry?
There could be two versions to this story.
1. These men were in fact helping the LTTE.
OR
2. These journalist were writing against the MR govt and MR wanted to get rid of them. I read somewhere else that they were planning a play dipicting what a FRAUD this govt is. The evidance can be easily planted and doctored.

How to EXTRACT the TRUE STORY of defence.lk and Keheliya Rambukwella's statement
But a statement to the Police by the Captain of the container vessel, The Sunday Times learnt, contradicts the Navy version. He had said that he did not see any dinghies being destroyed.

situation report Iqbal Athas
Last week's reports on Tiger guerrilla attempt to attack the Colombo Harbour have raised some issues. The Navy claimed that it had destroyed two dinghies and the third had rammed the Taiwanese container vessel 'MV Peloponesian Pride.' The first, according to the Navy was destroyed, when personnel at a surveillance point near the Lighthouse opened fire. But a statement to the Police by the Captain of the container vessel, The Sunday Times learnt, contradicts the Navy version. He had said that he did not see any dinghies being destroyed.
Navy officials said earlier that their patrol craft had chased behind the two remaining boats, destroyed them and taken into custody three persons - W.A. Nimal Fernando (48), Chaminda Asiri alias Sukutan (30) and K. B. Rameshkumar (17). The three were from three different addresses in Negombo.
However, the suspects have told detectives of the Terrorism Investigation Division (TID) that they had been laying nets in three different locations at sea. Two other boats had also left with them at the same time from Negombo. At around 7 p.m. when they were laying nets, a boat had approached. Besides a person who was the coxswain, the other held a rifle. A Navy patrol vessel was on their trail. They had at first signaled the approaching boats to change course to prevent their nets being destroyed. Just then the Navy had allegedly opened fire destroying the boat that had hit their nets. Thereafter, the trio had jumped into sea. Then their boat too had been fired upon and destroyed.
Following the interrogation of the trio, the TID arrested six more from different locations in Negombo. They were W.A. Tyronne Fernando, W.J.C. Fernando, S. Ranjith Kumar, W. Raj Fernando, W. Sumith Tamil and W. L. Neuman Fernando.
One of the three suspects arrested earlier, Rameshkumar had denied when questioned by TID detectives that he told the Navy the trio had been issued with automatic weapons. This was after claim by a Navy official that Rameshkumar had admitted that he received weapons from the LTTE for the attack. Fishermen's groups from Negombo have now made representations to the Ministry of Defence asking them to investigate the incident. They have alleged that innocent fishermen have been implicated in the incident in an apparent bid to show the culprits have been rounded up.
