The governments of Sri Lanka and Egypt signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on Cultural Cooperation during an official visit to Egypt by Sri Lanka`s Minister for Culture Mahinda Yapa Abeywardana.
The agreement was signed by Minister Abeywardena on behalf of Sri Lanka and Farouk Hosni, Minister of Culture, on behalf of the government of Egypt, at the Cultural Ministry in Cairo.
This MOU directs the two countries for expanded cultural relations. It proposes cooperation between the fields of Museums, Libraries, Archaeological Protection, maintaining and restoration of cultural heritage. Exchange of cultural troupes, artistes, ballet and theatre on a reciprocal basis, exchange of books, traditional and folk arts, cinema and delegations to film festivals are also proposed.
The cooperation in the field of culture, under the framework of the initiatives of UNESCO and other International Organizations are also proposed in the MOU as a new provision.
The MOU had been expanded into many fields wherein an innovative channel could be enhanced for a better practice of Cultural Diplomacy between the two countries.
After the signing, the two Ministers assured that they would implement the MOU to nourish the cultures of both countries.
Egypt, a landmark of world history and human civilization, and Sri Lanka, a country with a history which dates back to thousands of years, have many cultural riches.
The Sri Lankan delegation to this ceremony included Wijesiri Hettiarachchi, Ambassador of Sri Lanka, Mrs. Shirani Ariyarathne, Second Secretary (Commerce) of the embassy and Wasantha Yapa Abeywardena, Private Secretary to Minister of Culture.
Minister Mahinda Yapa Abeywardana arrived in Cairo on January 13 for a 10-day visit. He also visited the archeaological sites in Luxor and Cairo..
Minister Abeywardena expressed his deep appreciation to his Egyptian counterpart for the excellent hospitality afforded to him and his delegation during their stay in Cairo and extended an invitation to Farouk Hosni, Minister of Culture of Egypt to visit Sri Lanka.
