Senior Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva said on Thursday there had been no real need for the Government to accommodate crossovers from the UNP, but it could not reject them democratically as they wanted to join hands with President Mahinda Rajapaksa.
Speaking at a function to mark the handing over of 25 buses to Bandarawela Depot, the Minister said despite allegations made in this regard, the President had not wanted to create a split in the UNP.
The Minister said at the time of signing the MoU, President Rajapaksa had impressed upon the UNP leadership the need to treat party MPs properly to avoid discord in the party.
`Meanwhile, the President had also pointed out that he could not reject any UNP MP joining hands with him due to dissatisfaction with the leadership. So, it is the responsibility of any political party leader to prevent such splits without blaming it on the Government,` he said.
