The army yesterday seized the LTTE-held Uyilankuma-Anandakulam entry/exit point situated about a km off its own frontline as it stepped up pressure on the LTTE units deployed in the western part of the Vanni.
Troops killed at least eight LTTE cadres during the battle in which the army lost a soldier while six others received injuries.
Military spokesman Brigadier Udaya Nanayakkara said that the troops would hold on to the area. The ICRC vacated the Uyilankuma-Anandakulam entry/exit point early last September after the launch a ground offensive to bring Silavaturai, south of Mannar under its control.
The only other entry/exit point available for civilian movement is at Omanthai on the Kandy-Jaffna A 9 road. Yesterday`s assault on the LTTE post would increase pressure on the LTTE now struggling against an unconventional ground offensive.
