The Jatika Hela Urumaya yesterday said it could not be bribed to join the Opposition in Parliament. Its leader, Ven. Ellawala Medhananda Nayaka Thera said the LTTE had channelled funds through the UNP to offer bribes to members of the JHU to cross the floor of the House and join the opposition, but the JHU would stand by its policy of supporting the government of President Mahinda Rajapaksa, who is trying to defeat the LTTE terrorists. Addressing a press conference in the Parliament complex, the Nayake Thera said the UNP which had once called the JHU a Duseela Samagama was shamelessly asking for their support. Bribes were offered to four Ven. Theras of the JHU. There was an international conspiracy to strengthen the LTTE and weaken the Armed Forces and recently a pro-LTTE group from Canada had come to Colombo to provide funds to bribe government members to defect. A certain radio station had in a broadcast yesterday claimed that four members of the JHU were joining the opposition.
The LTTE was weakened today and had been defeated in the Eastern Province. They did not have the military strength to attack any camp of the Armed Forces and were engaged in small scale terrorists acts. The Armed Forces were now concentrating on the North and the only way to stop it was to politically defeat the government. That was a part of the international conspiracy against President
Mahinda Rajapaksa but the JHU will not be a party to any conspiracy, hatched by the LTTE-UNP and international forces, against the government, the Thera said.
Ven Udawatte Nanda Thera, Ven. Kotapola Amarakitti Thera, Ven. Aparakke Punnananda Thera and Ven. Alawwe Nandaloka Thera, JHU members of Parliament, said they will not join the opposition though some persons had approached them and requested them to join the Opposition.
Asked whether they could name the persons who offered them bribes to vote against the Budget and join the opposition the Ven. Aturaliye Ratana Thera said the JHU did not went to disclose their identities but bribes were offered to the JHU members to defect from the Government.
