Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa said that some 20,000 youths have been recruited to the armed forces during this year as the result of the effectiveness of the Government propaganda campaign.
`Because of the major propaganda campaign launched specially at village level, we were able to recruit some 20,000 youth to the armed forces so far during this year,` the Defence Secretary said.
Addressing a ceremony at the Defence Ministry recently, where 27 three-wheelers, funded by the Ranaviru Seva Authority,
were distributed among families of disabled service personnel, Mr. Rajapaksa expressed the necessity of going to village level, as current recruitment drives only focused at the town level.
`We should set up centres at village level to recruit youths to the armed forces, otherwise the village youths might lose the opportunity, as they would find difficulties when filling applications,` he said.
In response to a proposal from retired disabled soldiers that they be allowed to rejoin the forces at least to be deployed to protect camps, the Defence Secretary said that he would consider the request seriously and take appropriate action to implement it.
The meeting was organized by the the Ranaviru Seva Authority`s welfare project for disabled service personnel. A total of 201 three-wheelers were distributed to families of disabled soldiers.
Ministry Additional Secretary Sunil Sirisena, Ranaviru Seva Authority Chairman Lt. Col. Lalith Gunaratne (Rtd), disabled service personnel and their family members were also present on the occasion.
