The budget debate was added flavour by UNP MP for the Galle district Vajira Abeywardane yesterday in Parliament, who showed off a coconut and a 50- gram milk powder packet, to protest the soaring cost of living.
Abeywardane who spoke during the budget debate pointed out that for the first time in history, milk powder is sold in small quantities as people`s purchasing power had declined to such a level.
He pointed out people had been compelled to purchase milk powder in 50gms packets because they are unable to afford a 400g-packet at the present high prices. Showing off the packet to the House he asked how ordinary people are to make ends meet under these circumstances. The UNP MP also held up a coconut, which he said was borrowed from the parliamentary canteen. He said that it was sold in the canteen for Rs. 40 and this speaks volumes about the difficulties people undergo in making a living.
