North and Eastern Provincial Councils will begin separate administration with the dawn of New Year today (01).
Accordingly, Rear Admiral Mohan Wijeyawickrema, a retired naval officer has been appointed as the Governor for Eastern Province . He will act as the Governor for Northern Province as well.
Funds from the budget for the New Year have been allocated separately for the two provinces. As such, development work for the provinces would be undertaken by the respective ministries of the provinces. Rear Admiral Mohan Wijewickrema said that two separate secretaries for the two Provincial Councils would be appointed by the President soon. The provincial ministry that was at Trincomalee while the two provinces were merged would now become the ministry for the Eastern Province . Also, the duties of ministries of the Northern Province would be carried out from Eastern Provincial Council for two weeks. Later, they would be shifted to Provincial Agriculture Centre at Mihindupura in Trincomalee.
However, duties of Northern Provincial Councils would be executed from offices to be built at Vavuniya said Governor Mohan Wijewickrema.
The officers and other employees required to serve in the two provincial Councils have been already appointed and would report for duty today said Governor Wijewickrema.
The Northern and Eastern Provinces were de-merged on a judgment by Supreme Court on the 16th October last year. The petition against the merger was filed by two Parliamentarians and a member of the JVP.
