The de-merger of the northern and eastern provinces has created problems in the education sector due to the shortage in education officials in the area, an education official said.
A top provincial education official told the Daily Mirror yesterday they had a shortage of qualified education officials in the Sri Lanka Education Administrative Service, and now the problem would be aggravated.
However, he said they would not have any problem in deploying clerical officials to the two provinces. At present, the Provincial Education Office for both provinces is situated in Trincomalee. Now the Northern Provincial Education office would be shifted to Vavuniya, the official said.
Meanwhile, education officials in the eastern province scotched speculation that the North-East governor had instructed them to start work after reciting the National Anthem at their respective institutions from today.
