An Uva Provincial Council member has filed action against an international airline claiming damages that he was treated in an `unprofessional and discourteous manner` as a disabled passenger while on a flight to Frankfurt early this year. The member, Senarath Attanayake, a lawyer and also an ex-minister of the Uva Provincial Council, who has to use a wheelchair to get about is claiming Rs. 10 million from Qatar Airways for the alleged ill-treatment.

He has filed a case in the Colombo District Courts claiming he had informed Classic Travels, his travel agent, to inform Qatar Airways that he has to use a wheelchair and that he will be using two wheelchairs-one electric and the other a manual- during his trip to Frankfurt via Doha, Qatar. He was flying to attend an international exhibition.

He claims that when he arrived at Frankfurt he was informed that the two wheelchairs had been misplaced by the airline. Thus causing him inconvenience.

He said the wheelchairs were returned to him only two days later and he had to obtain an alternative mode of transport on his own accord while the airline authorities did not help him in anyway.

He also said the wheel chairs were returned to him damaged and with parts missing.

He said that due to the negligence of the airline authorities he could not carry out his marketing strategy at the exhibition.

Mr. Attanayake had requested Qatar Airways to donate a sum of Rs 100,000 to a disabled home as compensation but since there was no response from the authorities concerned he therefore claimed Rs. 10 million as compensation for the irresponsible and discourteous treatment meted to him.

Excellent decision by Mr Attanayake. Airliners are just too busy in making money not the service as the passangers would expect.

Foreign investors

be aware, you be charged and bullied by the authorities in Colombo rather than the peoples in lanka.

why didn't he use the state owned airline the srilankan airline ? one would imagine, specially if he is a politician he should pay to his own country airline rather than using and paying to a foreign owned airline.

now he is after 10mln. no wounder why!!

This reminds me of one of my Trip to an Arabian Country where the Airline Attendant (MALE) ordered me to hide and or remove the Cross from my Chain.

One thing we have to remember, the Politicians Action is right and it will be taken into consideration by the Foreign Airline. What happen's if this is Sri Lankan Airline?????????

No one disputes the treatment in the middle east if you are not a Muslim.
where ever you are ,you are expected to go by the land of the law is understandable. when it comes to srilanka a failed state and a begging nation in the world cannot afford to loose a business, specially a foreign one.

it is the job of the politicians to safe guard the foreign investment. imagine if the Qatar airways pull out of Colombo air port, how many maids should be sent to the middle east to get the revenue once produced by Qatar?

if the politician acts in a way to expel a foreign investor then how on earth the south going to sort the national question?

yes, the politician may have experienced mis treatment or the politician expected too much from a cheap airline or he may be late to get to the airline on that particular day. whatever it is, it is not the way a politician could act at this time and towards the foreign investor!!
