Mannar was yesterday gripped by tension and panic after the discovery of four bodies of one family, including two children in Thomaspura, police said.
Mannar police said suspected LTTE gunmen had stormed the house of this family, and massacred the members around midnight on Thursday.
Police said they found three of the four bodies hung inside their home.
The victims were identified as Mary Meadaline (27), Moorthy Martin (35), Ann Nilxon (7) and A. Luxica (9).
?The attackers had gang-raped the woman before killing her. The couple had been providing information to the army for a long time?, an army official claimed.
Additional military personnel had been deployed in the area as a precautionary measure as large crowds thronged the area to witness the gruesome scene.
The SLMM had also visited the scene.
Meanwhile, the Tamilnet website reported that the massacre was allegedly carried out by elements of the Army, but Military spokesman Prasad Samarsinghe said it was another fabricated story by the LTTE to discredit the security forces personnel. Suspected Tamil Tigers also shot and injured a Grama Sevaka of the Kopay Central division at his house yesterday morning.
Military sources said that the 58 year-old Joseph Ratnarajah, was at his home when suspected LTTE gunmen arrived on a motorcycle and shot and fled the scene.
