The Ceylon Teachers Service Union (CTSU) has withdrawn its decision to boycott the forthcoming GCE Advanced Level Examination duties and answer script marking.
`We have decided not to boycott the activities connected with the examination because Education Minister Susil Premjayantha has agreed to our demands at a discussion held between Ministry officials and us recently,` Mahinda Jayasinghe General Secretary of the CTSU told The Island yesterday.
He said teacher service promotions had not been handled properly by the Education Ministry for several years. `A large number of graduate teachers are holding minor positions in the teachers` service. Their salaries also are very low. The CTSU held a protest against this opposite the Education Ministry recently and the Minister met us and discussed the problem,` he said.
Jayasinghe said that all graduates of the teachers` service would be given promotions according to the Minister`s decision. The salary anomalies will be rectified immediately. `However, we request the Minister that the Cabinet paper on these matters should be presented immediately. We are thankful to the Minister and other officials of the Education Ministry for their prompt attention,` he said.
