Secretary to former President Chandrika Kumaratunga will shortly take over the Sri Lankan High Commission in Ottawa.
The Foreign Ministry Tuesday announced W. J. S. Karunaratne`s appointment after Canada accepted the new posting. He was proposed as Lanka`s top envoy after Canada dismissed the previous administration`s first choice Chandrananda De Silva, a former Elections Commissioner. Subsequently he functioned as security advisor to Kumaratunga.
Canada refused to accept him as he had held the post of presidential security advisor. Although the government initially insisted on De Silva`s appointment subsequently Karunaratne was proposed as Colombo`s choice.
Karunaratne`s predecessor Kusumsiri Balapatabendi is our High Commissioner in Australia.
The Parliamentary High Posts Committee, chaired by the Prime Minister unanimously approved Karunaratne`s appointment over two months ago.
