If not for the private sector the CMC would not have been able to collect and dispose of 700 tons of garbage per day, for which the council pays around 18 million a month, said Colombo Municipal Commissioner Dr. Jayantha Liyanage yesterday.
`This is my personal belief that the council which employs 13,600 persons at present cannot do this alone.`
I hope to obtain special approval from the treasury to recruit around 300 persons. We are short of 19 persons for the Accounts Department Some of the urgent recruitments are okayed by the Governor of the Western Province Alavi Moulana as the Colombo Municipality performs essential services to the public which cannot be neglected.
The garbage problem between the 80s and now is of a completely different picture as there are an increasing number of people in Colombo. As the floating population increases garbage increases, he said.
