The 2550 Buddha Jayanthi Vesak Festival celebrations of Chennai branch of the Mahabodhi Society of Sri Lanka commenced May 03 with the ordination of Tamil Samaneras. Such ordinations began in 2000 as key step in the Buddhist revival to attract Tamil to Buddhism and for Buddhist revival. Since then, temporary and permanent ordination programmes have been conducted by the Mahabodhi Society. Other organizations and personnel in Tamilnadu have also joined in the programmes.
A few years ago Sri Lankan Buddhist monks were not welcome in Tamilnadu due to the Sinhala-Tamil conflict. The endeavours of the Mahabodhi Society have proved successful in relation to Buddhist revival in Tamilnadu, President, Mahabodhi Society of Sri Lanka, Ven. Banagala Upatissa Thera said.
A Buddhist education programme for the new Samanera Monks is scheduled to be held during the Vesak celebration. Chief Incumbent of Buddha Wedu Temple, Ven. Mudalankuliye Rathanajothi thera, Deputy Incumbent of Mahabodhi Chennai Center, Ven. Kalawane Mahanama thera, residing monks of the Chennai Mahabodhi Center, Ven. Katudora Sumana thera and Thirunalveli Bodhidamma thera, Chief Incumbent of Burmese Temple, Chennai, Ven. Watavo thera and Sumitha Bhikkuni of Maharashta will conduct these programmes.
