`Although there were setbacks for the UNP after the general election, today the people have a high regard for the policies and concepts of the UNP. There was efficient administration during the UNP government which is lacking today`, said Karu Jayasuriya, Deputy Leader of the UNP participating as the chief guest at the oaths taking ceremony of the Members of the Beruwala UC held at the Beruwela grounds.
Addressing the massive gathering he said that it was his policy not to criticise the existing government but today the mere existence was a problem for the people. `There is no proper administration in the country. The farmers are leading a hard life and unable to sell their paddy crop. Already five months have elapsed after the presidential election but no solutions to the burning questions have been found,` he said.
Al-Haj Mazahim Mohamed the new Chairman of UC Beruwala, Alhaj Hazan Mohammed, Vice Chairman, Takeer Mohamed, Hamza Uvais, Mohammed Ansar, Sampath Perera, Mohammed Anaz Mohammed, and Members of the Beruwela PS took oaths in the presence of the Deputy Leader of the UNP.
Dr. Rajitha Senaratne, District Member of Kalutara said that it was a great victory for the United National Party to win four Urban Councils in Kalutara District as it had always been a red fortress.
`This is supposed to be an historic event in the Kalutara District. In other urban areas, where the party had some of the powerful local govt institutes, the party lost,` he said.
Alhaj Mazahim Mohammed, the New-Chairman, Parakrama Gunawardhana, organiser of Beruwala electorate, Sampath Perera, a Member of UC-Beruwala, A. R. M. Baduddhin Leader of the opposition of Beruwala PS, Kithsiri Kahatapiriya, Leader of the Opposition of Provincial Council also spoke.
