A massive incomplete building, covering a block of about fifty perches of land of the Sunandarama Maha Viharaya, Ambalangoda, headquarters of Amerapura Maha Nikaya, has become a small shrub jungle after being neglected for several decades.
All sorts of sorded activities are been carried out even during day time. The place is now surrounded by a newl-built wall. The abondoned building is on the Paniyanduwa and Ederamulla road.
Construction work of this massive building started some eight decades ago by Buddhist philanthropists of the area and all of them are dead and gone.
Due to various reasons, work had been abandoned after constructing the walls upto the roof level. No Buddhist organisation or government has taken any interest to complete the building as it would cost a massive sum of money, it appears.
Initially it had been planned to construct a model hell (Narakadhiya) underneath the building and due to that reason, the place is now known as `Narakadhiya` by the people of the area. They say it is the ideal name going by the nefarious activities that are taking place there.
If this building cannot be completed, authorities can demolish the structure in order to make use of the land and to use the bricks to constuct a few houses for the tsunami-affected people, the residents say.
