Children`s hospital in filthy state
Tuesday, 25 April 2006 - 3:51 AM SL Time

Parents of children warded at the Lady Ridgeway Hospital and doctors are irked over the poor sanitation conditions prevailing in the hospital. They have urged the hospital authorities to take immediate action to rectify the situation which they say is a result of the inefficiency of the cleaning service conducted by a private company contracted by the hospital.

Parents of children admitted to this hospital and doctors told The Island that repeated requests and complaints made to the authorities had fallen on deaf ears and the cleaning service continues its neglect its duties. Flies are found all over the wards and unclean wards are a threat to patients.

A senior doctor at the hospital said remnants of food were thrown into most drains in the precinct of the hospital and no person had been detailed by the cleaning service to clear the drains of the putrid matter. The garden of the hospital outside the wards too was unclean but the hospital interior was far from satisfactory.

Attempt to contact Dr. Athula Kahandaliyana Director General Ministry of Health and Consultant Paediatrictrian Dr.Jeevani Sarathchandra were unsuccessful but Secretary Dr.Nihal Jayatilaka said he would attend to the problem immediately.
