Schoolchildren will be entitled to travel free of charge in SLTB buses as the increased bus fares will come into force from today.
Transport Ministry said both private and SLTB bus fares will increase from today and the minimum fare of Rs 4 would increase to Rs. 5.
According to the new bus fares, Rs. 6 will remain unchanged while fares from Rs. 7 to Rs. 9 will increase by Rs. 1. Bus fares from Rs10 to Rs15 will increase by two rupees while fare from Rs 16 to Rs19 will increase by three rupees.
Meanwhile, Transport Minister A.H.M. Fowzie said the Railway prices would not be increased.
With government`s decision to increase fuel prices, private bus owners threatened a countrywide strike if bus fares were not increased. They demanded a 26 percent fare hike while the Minister insisted on 15 percent. Both parties reached a compromise last Thursday to increase bus fares by 16 percent.
