Several Tamil families in Deraniyagala have complained that although inquiries into their applications for compensation for 1983 violence have been completed, payment was not forthcoming from the Presidential Secretariat.
A victim said that he had awaited nearly 23 years since submitting the claim. But the Minister inquiring into ethnic violence of 1983, had insisted on documents already sent to the Ministry of Rehabilitation and Reconstruction several years ago. One was the Police Report. `As Departments are fully aware, all documents were destroyed after five years`
The victims appealed to the President to intervene and expedite payment, as most of the applicants are in poor health.
