Four major tanks in Polonnaruwa have been filled to capacity and farmers can begin paddy cultivation for the Yala season without any inconvenience.
`The Parakrama Samudraya, Minneriya Wewa, Girithale Wewa and Kaudulla Wewa have filled completely. Of them, Kaudulla Wewa is already spilling over. The others too have reached the spill level. This is very good news for farmers,` Chief Irrigation Engineer of the Polonnaruwa Region E. Sumanadasa told The Island yesterday.
Paddy cultivation during the last season had been successful. The farmers are now set for the next Yala season. They will begin to prepare paddy fields for the next crop during this month. `We will issue water fro those tanka to the paddy fields from next week ,` he said adding that the rains were continuing in the area, but they would hold the water at full level till they begin distributing it.
