Private bus operators yesterday threatened to launch a strike from today if the government failed to approve an immediate bus fare hike.
Private Omnibus Owners Federation Joint President Anjana Priyanjith said bus owners were incurring heavy losses due to the recent price hike on fuel and therefore needed an immediate increase if they were to continue with the services.
A spokesman for the National Transport Commission which has to approve such a fare hike, said hasty decisions could not be taken without following the proper procedure and vowed that it had to also consider the plight of the commuters before deciding on the matter.
Transport Minister A.H.M. Fowzie on Sunday said the Government was unable to meet the demand of a 25% fare hike made by private bus owners.
