The Cabinet has recently granted its approval to remove unnecessary restrictions on the tapping of Kitul trees for the production of jaggery.
Minister of Public Administration and Home Affairs Dr. Sarath Amunugama in his Memorandum said that the issue of permits for tapping Kitul trees is an additional as well as unnecessary duty entrusted to the Divisional Secretary.
Since local sugar production meets less than 20 percent of the local demand, price of sugar has gone up. Therefore, the Minister hoped to provide assistance for production of jaggery as a substitute.
The Cabinet decided to permit a person to tap Kitul trees for the purpose of producing jaggery in his land without licence.
