The Mihintale police have initiated inquiries into an incident of cutting and removing rails from the Anuradhapura ? Mihintale railway track.
At Kannathiya in the Asokapura area close to Minhintale, a part of the rail, seventy feet long had been cut and removed.
This railroad from Anuradhapura to Mihintale was constructed on the occasion of the fifteenth ?Gam Udawa? anniversary held at Mihintale in 1993. Presently, this rail track is used only during the Poson season and on special occasions.
The Mihintale police OIC, Sub Inspector E.M.S.,Mahanama said the rails had been removed some days ago, but the watcher of the rail road had not noticed the theft until a resident from the Asokapura area had informed the police.
The rail had been cut after heating it with an oxyacetylene cutter and parts of the rail had been transported in an elf lorry. Inquiries so far conducted revealthat an army deserter had been involved in this robbery. The rail was also cut half way, through in two other places.
OIC Mahanama said a warrant for arrest had been issued, but the suspect was absconding. It was also revealed he had cut rails in the main line on two earlier occasions
The assessed value of the rails cut and removed was about Rs.137,080. Further inquiries are being conducted by Mihintale police.
