Distribution of letters and postal services were completely crippled as the General Post Office in Kandy and post offices in other towns were closed by a strike, demanding the revision of 1/2006 circular on salaries.
Meanwhile, a section of the nursing staff at the Kandy General hospital struck work while another section worked. Medical officers and laboratory technologists reported for work while the minor staff joined the strike.
Chief Administrative Director of the hospital Dr. M.G.P Samarasinghe said that the Army helped out at the OPD and other outdoor clinics.
Ambulance drivers also joined the strike and only two ambulances worked. The main pharmacy too was closed as the pharmacists too joined the strike, affecting the issue of drugs to patients. However, hospital authorities had made arrangements for OPD patients to obtain their drugs from the Kandy Osu Sala.
