President Mahinda Rajapakse, honouring a pledge he made, will present Rs. One million to Commonwealth Games gold medallist Chintana Vidanage at a special ceremony to be held at the Temple Trees at 5 p.m. on Friday, Sports Minister Jeevan Kumaranatunga told `Daily Mirror` yesterday. The President had made a pledge in his election manifesto `Mahinda Chintanaya` to give Rs. Ten million as a reward for an Olympic medal and One million for a commonwealth games medal.
The Minister added that the Sports Ministry will sponsor all of Vidanage`s all sporting needs in the future under a special programme.The Minister said that the package will also include a job, assistance of a highly qualified coach, state of the art training facilities, his future education while it would also include a special monthly stipend for the weight lifter for his other requirements.
Vidanage who had failed to enter the university by only a few marks had told media in Australia that he wished to pursue further studies before doing a job.
