The Police Women and Child Protection Division has opened an investigation into the case where a child had been used by an uniformed policeman to carry ballot boxes from the Election Centre, Colombo 8, on Wednesday. The investigation was launched after The Island and our sister newspaper Divaina carried the photographs.
While the Child Protection Authority and Women and Child Protection Division of the police have been taking strict action against those who employ children, police are investigating how a child came to be employed to carry ballot boxes. The policeman and Election officials are to be questioned, Acting Director of the Women and Child Protection Division Cecil Silva said yesterday (30).
He said he continued to receive SMS messages and telephone calls about the matter after the photograph was published in our newspapers on Wednesday.
He said the policeman had committed a serious offence.
