On the eve of the local council polls, the JVP said yesterday the elections tomorrow would be historic in demonstrating the popular support for the party and establishing it as the new force to take over the administration of Sri Lanka.
Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna General Secretary Tilvin Silva and Propaganda Secretary Wimal Weerawansa told a news conference yesterday that the party had held some 12,000 meetings all over the country and was confident of emerging with a historic victory.
Mr. Weerawansa said tomorrow`s election and the emergence of the JVP as a major party would change the country`s political landscape.
?This election will demonstrate the people`s power we command and our vote base. It will clearly prove that the JVP is the party to take over the country in the future,? Mr. Weerawansa said.
He said the JVP hoped to win a large number of the 266 councils going to the polls tomorrow and it was campaigning intensely in other areas also where local elections would be held later.
General Secretary Silva said the party had conducted its campaign peacefully and was heading for a big victory though it was subjected to violence by other parties, including PA goons who were the worst offenders.
Yesterday`s JVP claim came a day after the ruling UPFA said it hoped for a landslide victory pushing the UNP into third place while the UNP insisted it would win upto 70 percent of the local councils largely because of the split between the UPFA and the JVP.
