The first rain water harvesting system constructed under the `Improving Water Security in Southern Province Affected by Tsunami Through Domestic Rainwater Harvesting Systems` of the Lanka Rain Water Harvesting (LRWHF) will be handed over to the households at a ceremony on March 28 at 8.30 am at the Godamaga Buddhist Temple.
Urban Development and Water Supply Minister Dinesh Gunawardena will participate.
The overall objective of this project is to improve access to potable water by the tsunami-affected in the Southern Province.Over 3,300 rain water harvesting systems in Galle, Matara and the Hambantota districts over a three-year period will be constructed.
Other activities planned under this project are to raise public awareness on rain water harvesting, establishment of information centers and creating a pool of locally trained masons to construction harvesting systems.
The project is jointly funded by Malteser International, UNICEF and USAID, a Forum spokesman said.
