Top tax officer remanded on charges of criminal fraud

This fellow very likely is the `sprat` or the `tip of the ice-berg`. The `sharks` would be still swimming around happily and the larger part of the `ice-berg` would be beneath the surface hidden away from sight!!

Good. Please also advice us what we should do to the man who robbed Rs. 92 million from the tsunami funds.

Is this true? 357 million rupees?

  • 23 Mar 2006 04:45:54 GMT

Divide Rs. 357 million by 19 million.

He had robbed Rs. 19 from each one of us!

This felow may have got about a million as his share but if he actually got 357 million bucks all to himself he would not have been hanging around in the country to get caught by his scruff!! Obviously the other `king pins` are still at large.

    Kiwi,

Yes. It does not make any sense of robbing Rs. 357 mil in Sri Lankan Rupees.

What can you do with such a large amount of money?

You can buy property, but that will definitely rouse suspicion. (One can buy about 1,000 perches in prime Colombo area by that money. But why one needs such kind of land?)

You cannot officially convert such a large amount to any foreign currency. That will rouse suspicion.

You cannot easily invest that kind of money. That will rouse suspicion. People will ask how a retired government official has that kind of money.

You cannot keep money like this in bank accounts in Sri Lanka. The bank manager will definitely question why. You cannot put that in Swiss accounts, because then you have to first convert in to USD or Euro.

    Lots of unanswered questions.

    Naleen,

Let me get this thing clear. Isn`t it allegedly that MR has taken that kind of money or has it been proven lately?

Honestly, I was not around in SL so I overheard people saying this but isn`t it something that can be used to tarnish his name and can be impeached upon had he done so?

Would like to know some concrete answers if you know them by any chance.

19 Rupees from each of us! After all what meagre sum is this? If it is going to help a man and his family its ok I write it off as bad debt.

If that 357 million is returned, some other joker will swindle it!
