Peradeniya Police have arrested a female nurse of the Peradeniya Teaching (General) Hospital for allegedly stealing a female infant from the hospital.
The nurse is reported to have removed a three-day old baby while her mother fell asleep at about 4.45 p.m. on Saturday (18).
The nurse who is a mother and who counts a service of about 30 years in public service is believed to have sold the infant to a childless couple in Wattegama area.
The infant was recovered after a strenuous effort by the police and the staff of the hospital, Director of the Hospital Dr. Ms. Chandra Gunatilake said yesterday (19).
Peradeniya police arrested the nurse Malini Jayatilake and a resident of Wattegama Ranjith Premachandra who had the infant in his possession. They were produced before the Kandy acting Magistrate Upali Bogahapitiya yesterday (19) who remanded them till March 23.
Further investigations are conducted by CI, Saman Yatawara OIC, Peradeniya.
