The government has formulated a programme to ensure the smooth functioning of all SLCT depots, SLTB Chairman Tudor Dayaratne said on Monday (13).
Speaking at the handing over of 14 new buses to the Matara depot at the Matara bus terminal, he said in the past almost all SLTB bus depots ran into financial difficulties due to mismanagement, especially as the daily income from buses was not sufficient to meet the daily expenses.
He said the cooperation of the SLTB trade unions was very essential for the smooth running and profitable operation of the bus services. He added that an investigations committee was to be appointed to look into the performance of the employees and also to assess the material resources available at the SLTB depots.
There was a very large stock of scrap metal and used material like spare parts piled up in the depots which can be used or sold, he said, adding that steps were being taken to rehabilitate 1,500 buses, which were not in running condition, so that all those valuable assets now lying idle could be used for the improvement of the SLTB and to make it a profit making concern.
