Three youths ? all in their early twenties ? were drowned while bathing in the Deduru Oya yesterday morning and rescue operations were continuing last evening to recover their bodies, police said.
Chilaw police said they had sought the assistance of the Navy to recover the bodies of the victims identified as Suresh Indrajith (23) of Chilaw, Chaminda Roshan Edirisinghe (23) of Udugampola, and K. M. Dinesh Silva (24) of Ja-Ela ? all employees of a leading super market chain.
Police said the victims were part of a group of friends who had gone on a trip to Chilaw from where they took a boat ride. They said the 15 youngsters had gone on the boat ride around 10 in the morning and had found three of their colleagues missing when they had gone for a bath in the Deduru Oya. The boys with the help of the people in the area had searched for the bodies for several hours before bringing it to the notice of the police.
