A UPFA candidate Manoj Mendis, contesting the Hikkaduwa Pradeshiya Sabha addressing a local government election rally at Kalupe, Hikkaduwa was shot at from a vehicle yesterday. He was not injured but a number persons, who were near him were hurt. Four who received gunshot injuries were rushed to the Karapitiya hospital and are said to be in a critical condition, hospital sources said.
Some other supporters of the candidate were also injured but not seriously. The attackers had used an automatic assault rifle persons who were at the meeting have told the Hikkaduwa police.
The injured were identified as K.Premaratna (32) W. S. Mahindaratna (60), Subhasinghe Sugathkumara (21) and S. Buddhika (21) all residents of the Meetiyagoda police area, acting OIC Meetiyagoda police said.
The attackers have not been identified and no suspects have been arrested yet, he said.
