The government has cancelled all transfers, promotions and foreign tours of public servants until the conclusion of the local government elections on March 30.
A spokesman for the Public Administration Ministry said a circular had already been issued outlining these directives on the instructions of Elections Commissioner Dayananda Dissanayake.
He said the Commissioner had decided on the move to ensure a free and fair poll.
However, several trade unions in the education sector claimed that hundreds of teachers had been transferred for political reasons after the announcement of the election. Ceylon Teachers Union President Joseph Starline charged that several teachers had been transferred without following the proper procedure in the Western Province too. He said the Human Rights Commission has also requested the authorities to suspend those transfers.
Meanwhile, Ceylon Teachers Services Union General Secretary Mahinda Jayasinghe also said their members had been transferred in all parts of the country.
