All police transfers made after the National Police Commission ceased to function are not valid and legal action could be taken against those who obtained transfers through illegal procedures, former Internal Security Affairs Minister MP John Amaratunga said.
He said that over 1,000 police transfers made, though such transfers were not legal during the period of NPC was not functioning. The very purpose of the National Police Commission?by way of the 17th Amendment to the Constitution?was to ensure an efficient police service where disciplinary control is properly exercised. However, after the term of office of the Commissioners ended in November 2005, new Commissioners have not been appointed, since the Constitutional Council is itself not functioning.
Amaratunga said that the UNP had requested the President and IGP to stop immediately the police officers being transferred according to the whims and fancies of politicos, but no action had been taken so far.
