Sri Lanka`s troubled Northern and Eastern provinces will be administered as separate provinces with effect from the new year, a top state official said Monday.

Rear Admiral Mohan Wijewickrema, who is currently the governor for the merged Northeastern Province, said that he had been appointed as the governor of the eastern province and a separate governor for the northern province would soon be appointed by President Mahinda Rajapakse.

The two provinces came to be merged in July 1987 as part of the India-Sri Lanka agreement when the Indian government made its intervention then to bring about a negotiated end to the island`s separatist armed conflict.

The Supreme Court on Oct. 16 this year ruled that the 1987 order by the then President of Sri Lanka merging the two provinces was not in keeping with the country`s constitution and should therefore be separate provinces.

Wijewickrema said there will now be two separate administrations as was ruled by the Supreme Court and added `it might be another year or so until we formally set up the Northern Province administration.`

The Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) rebels claim the two provinces the traditional homeland of the minority Tamils and are so opposed to the de-merger.

However, the Sinhala majority groups say the merged provinces distort the ethnic proportional representation in favor of the Tamils as a large number of Sinhala majority and Muslims have been historically living in the Eastern Province.

Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapakse said the civilian population in the Eastern Province should be given the choice to be merged or demerged at a referendum and the government would not interfere in the court ruling.

Rajapakse`s allies, the main left party the JVP and the Heritage Party who are bitterly opposed to a negotiated settlement of the separatist armed conflict with the Tiger rebels, have been putting pressure on the president to implement the court ruling.

When the north and the east existed as separate provinces prior to 1987 there were problems. When it was merged after 1987 the problems continued without change and now with the latests de-merger the problems probably would continue without change.

Therefore the only logical conclusion that can be arrived at is that merging or de-merging the north and east is not the solution to the problem and is not going to take the process of finding a solution anywhere.

This was on the card always. The two enemies of the nation Chandrika and Ranil with collaboration foreign NGO's and hsotile foreign governments made a pathetic attempt to carry out what the mass murederers wanted for his own safety. The experiment came to its ineveitable end. One enemy of the nation was rewarded by the international war mongers. But we saw tht she will be chased out from that also. Other enemy will come to his end with his party very soon.
Now Karuna to east Douglas to North.

Karuna Gave LTTE another Christmus present giving Kajuwatata (East) LTTE Leader ragu the Maamanithar status. He will be EELam for the eternity.

Only AntonBalla could not die in the EELam. If he comes back to EELam for any thing, he will be bombed by mistake during the next war.

Supreme Court in Sri Lanka? A joker is joking on behalf of Sinhalese Buddhist Chauvinists ... Will not make any sense when Eelam is formed!!

Just like, the right to their language was denied, like their right to education and employment was denied, like their right to livelihood was denied, their right to accept the assistance given by the international community for tsunami reconstruction was also denied to the Tamils. Tamil people are deeply hurt that the international community condones the Government of Sri Lanka to continue to claim the right as a ?sovereign government?.
