`Mihin Air` lands at Cabinet

The Cabinet yesterday approved the establishment of a Government-owned low cost airline - Mihin Air - aiming to provide affordable services to less affluent travellers, people leaving for overseas employment, particularly in the Gulf and Asian countries and to promote regional tourism.
The Memorandum was submitted by Ports and Aviation Minister Mangala Samaraweera.
For the setting up of the new airline, the initial capital contribution is estimated at around Rs. 500 million while the total project cost is estimated at Rs. 1,500 million. Since the Foreign Employment Bureau, Employees Trust Fund and several other Government agencies provide varieties of incentive schemes in support of the local working population as well as those engaged in overseas employment, these agencies are also participating as shareholders in this venture.
The annual funds spent by these agencies together with various schemes that the Government implements to promote exports could be channeled to the new airline to achieve the desired objectives in a cost effective manner.
The Sri Lanka Air Force has suggested that the operation of a new airline service could provide opportunities for career professionals in the Sri Lanka Air Force to move on to civil aviation upon completion of their assignment in the service.
On November 30, after the airline called for applications to recruit staff, Minister Samaraweera himself informed Parliament there was no Cabinet approval sought or granted for the much-hyped budget airline called Mihin Air.
The House debated the issue as an adjournment motion proposed by UNP MP Ravi Karunanayake.

Goverment-owned Mihin Air!. Why not name it 'mahinda air', that sounds better.
We cannot run our bus companies, railway and a host of other govet. owned companies profitably. Taxpayers are pumping a lot momey to keep them going. Now we have a airline to feed.
Few years down the road, more money will be taken out from Treasury to run it.
This will also be used as SLTB, Railway and Sothosa to give jobs to the boys.
This Chinthanaya thing is great, isn't it. Edited By - raigamakolla - 22 Dec 2006 06:24:37 G |

people leaving for overseas employment
This is the GoSL's NUMBER 1 source of foreign income, so it makes sense they will do whatever they can to make sure more women are sent over to the Arabs to be intimacyually asaulted, beaten and generally abused, so that they can buy weapons to do the same to the Tamil people.
What a useless circle it is eh, oh Mahinda Chinthana, what brilliance LOL, pathetic bunch of jokers, but which is worse, these jokers or the jokers being taken for a merry ride by them??? |

Rs. 1,500 million (US$1.5million) one cannot even by the tail piece of a Boeng or Airbus.
I don't know how they are going to get a fleet of air planes to run this airline.
As said above these politicians cannot even run bus service or railway profitably, and now they want start a budget airline. Give me break. |

| Mahendra Percy Rajapakse first transformed his name to Mahinda for politics, and then transformed that to Mihindu and the air line has his latest name, Mihin |

Starting off a budget airline is good, no doubt, whoever does, it is praiseworthy job.
The whole question is why the hell the government has to do that?
The more sensible and effective way would have been the government to give permission for private sector to start one. Then the tax payers? money will be safe and the country does not lose in anyway if it becomes another white elephant like the railways. |
