Ranatunga says banning Hair good for future cricket
Former Sri Lanka captain Arjuna Ranatunga on Sunday welcomed the ICC`s decision to ban Australia`s Darrell Hair from international umpiring, accusing him of anti-Asian bias.
`Hair had a prejudice against Asian teams. I am happy that he is finally out,` Ranatunga said. `The decision will do good to future cricket.`
The decision to oust Hair was taken at the ICC executive board`s two-day meeting that ended Saturday in the Indian city of Mumbai following a complaint by the Pakistan Cricket Board.
Hair has been under pressure since he accused Pakistan of ball tampering during a test against England at The Oval in August. Pakistan captain Inzamam-ul-Haq protested the five-run penalty his squad was handed, and refused to return to the field immediately after the tea break, despite being called by Hair.
Hair awarded the match to England. It was the first forfeit in 129 years of Test cricket.
Ranatunga, now a politician and member of Sri Lankan parliament, first confronted Hair in 1995 during a Test against Australia in Melbourne.
Hair had no-balled Sri Lankan legspinner Muttiah Muralitharan seven times during the Test, when Ranatunga led the side. In protest Ranatunga asked his team to stop the game, which later resumed after officials intervened.
`He was a wrong man from the beginning to be in the cricket ground. I am happy that he is finally out,` Ranatunga, who led Sri Lanka to the World Cup title in 1996, told The Associated Press.
`I thank the ICC for taking the decision, which took a long time, but I think the ICC handled him well. They gave him time and chances, and finally it came to be known that he was not a fair umpire.`

| This picture and the Ranatunga;'s interview has no connection. This picture is mainly to denigrate Sinhala flag and Buddhism. Because of this picture Ranatunga too implicated. What is the plan of the person who posted this? |

Bheesan,
I agree that Ranatunga's comments about Hair has nothing to do with this picture but Arjuna Ranatunga is heavily involved with the sinhala nationalists. There is no point in you trying to hide that fact.
I wonder why you are getting upset about this picture showing him with an extremist 'monk'. Edited By - tarquin - 5 Nov 2006 21:56:44 GMT |

Ranatunga says banning Hair good for future
He is advicing the Buddhist Clergy as most of the guys nowadays don't shave their head hair as expected of them.
But they don't follow many other things too that were preached by Lord Buddha and let us see whether they take the preaching of a Cricketer. |

For you these Buddhist monks are just eye sore. But for the majority Sri Lankan, they are doing their one of the duties, that is protecting Buddhism and majority Buddhists. They are no different to Vietnam monks who lighted themselves to death during American invasion. Ours have not gone yet to that higher standards. Edited By - Bheesan - 6 Nov 2006 00:41:05 GMT |

I would be very glad to see them to that. Why are they waiting for? Speaking about 'Higher Standards'? Butchers! |

'Monk'ey Secret!
Monk:
Give me the flag! If you give it me, I will tell you a secret.
Ranatunga:
Get your own flag.
Monk:
So you don't want to know the secret, huh?
Ranatunga:
Alright, alright! Here is the flag! You are a pain in the neck. Now, tell me the 'big' secret.
Monk:
When you appear in a political demonstration always carry a 'Sinhala' flag, that will show the people how patriotic you are.
Ranatunga:
You are a cheater! Give me the flag back!
Monk:
Bonus 'secret', never make a 'monk' feels bad! You can't rise in the political ladder quickly, if we are in the bad mood.
Ranatunga:
Sorry! I am new to this. |

Guys,
Sri Lanka is a SINGHALA name for our country adopted in 1972 during which time the FOUR LEAVES WERE ADDED TO THE FLAG.
Pre 1972 had a flag for CEYLON that depicted representation of all communities on the Flag as it is now. Just because the name SL means singhala the Flag cannot become a pur singhala by any means.
GOOD TRY!!
From Flags by Carol P. Shaw, Running Press Gem, 1994:
The design of this flag has evolved gradually in an attempt to achieve national unity since the country, then known as Ceylon, gained its independence from Britain in 1948. Originally, the flag's central emblem was a gold lion and sword on a red field, derived from the flag of the Sinhalese kingdom of Kandy. As a consequence, it was not popular with the minority groups in the country, and so was amended in 1951 to include a green and orange band, to represent the Muslim and Tamil communities respectively. Finally, when the country adopted the local name of Sri Lanka in 1972, the flag was modified once more, with four leaves of the pipul tree, a Buddhist symbol, added to the four corners of the dark red panel. This version of the flag was in official use from 1978.
