Anti LTTE Sri Lankans in the United States has launched a campaign to unseat pro-LTTE Congressman Danny K. Davis, the Democratic Congressman from Illinois, who visited the LTTE`s Political Headquarters in Kilinochchi and met LTTE leaders in April 2005, at the next week`s general election.
Anti LTTE Sri Lankans have decided to rally round the Congressional Challenger for Illinois 7th District seat, Republican candidate Charles Hutchinson to defeat Danny K. Davis, who has been a member of Congress, representing the 7th Congressional District of Illinois, since 1996.
The New York Society of United Sri Lankans and the Citizens for Safer America Illinois, two anti LTTE organizations have launched this campaign.
According to the Citizens for Safer America Illinois they had distributed 5000 flayers and mailed 10,000 postcards targeting Illinois voters informing Congressman Davis`s links to the LTTE.
According to recent independent polls, Congressional Challenger Charles Hutchinson has maintained an edge over Congressman Danny K. Davis.
The Democratic Congressman`s Kilinochchi trip on April 2005,was paid for by a LTTE front organization; Tamil cultural organization, the Federation of Tamil Sangams of North America, based in Hickory Hills, Illinois.
The US Congressman came to Kilinochchi via the A9 highway and toured Mullaithivu without informing Sri Lankan government. During his six day Sri Lankan visit Congressman Danny K. Davis didn`t meet a single government official.
The LTTE was designated by the State Department as a foreign terrorist organization in 1997. As a result, federal law bars providing them with funding, arms or other material support.
Congressman Danny K. Davis was questioned by FBI after his Kilinochchi trip. After his controversial Kilinochchi trip the Democratic Congressman from Illinois said he knew that the group was ?associated? with the Tamil Tigers but did not realize that the trip`s costs were covered with funds controlled by the rebel group.
Sumith De Silva, President, New York Society of United Sri Lankans told The Nation that unseating Danny K. Davis is an important task.

From the Sri Lankan stand point it is important to defeat Dan Davis who has close ties with LTTE and visited Kilinochchi. Dan Davis losing the seat will send a strong message to all politicians in the west not to fall prey to the false propaganda of LTTE,? Sumith De Silva said.
