UNP yesterday accused the government of trying to politicize the Auditor General`s Department.
The new UNP General Secretary Tissa Attanayake told a news conference the government was delaying to fill the vacancy that had arisen after the retirement of former Auditor General S. C. Mayadunne and thereby attempting to politicize even the AG`s department.
He charged that by appointing an acting AG with his term being extended every two weeks the government was the taking first step towards politicizing the appointment.
Mr. Attanayake said it would not be too difficult to fathom the reasons for making such a political appointment as the government could then easily cover-up the mismanagement of finances in various ministries and state institutions.
He said another reason was to prevent exposing large scale scandals such as the VAT scam in which two government ministers were allegedly involved.
Mr. Attanayake said the government had forgotten its pledge to streamline the management of state finances and called on the government to follow proper procedures and appoint the new Auditor General without further delay.
