The UNP yesterday charged that the government had ordered ten luxury vehicles worth millions from a leading vehicle importer for UNP parliamentarians who crossed over to the government on Wednesday.
Addressing the weekly briefing in Colombo, party Assistant General Secretary Tissa Attanayake said those who crossed over claimed that they were supporting the government for a national programme.
`One of the MPs justified the decision to join the government saying they did it for the good of the country. Now, ten vehicles had been ordered to be used by them in the government. Is this the way of building the country according to a national programme,` he asked. When asked about the Supreme Court ruling that rejected the UNP decision to nullify the membership of Minister Rohitha Bogollagama when he joined the government earlier, Mr. Attanayake said the Court delivered such a decision on the basis that the party had failed to give a chance to explain his stand. He said the JVP could not abdicate its responsibility today by conducting lectures countrywide because it played the major role along with the JHU to elect the President.
